San Luis Obispo Club
Meetings
The San Luis Obispo Democratic Club meets on the 3rd Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. for dinner and 7:00 p.m. for discussion, at the Golden Gong Restaurant on Madonna Road, unless there is a special meeting, usually during the months of April and November or December.
Come join your favorite local Democrats at our regular meeting MONDAY, APRIL
21 – 6:00 p.m. at the Golden Gong restaurant for a double feature: First,
we’ll hear from a cabal of local SLO Democrats who attended the 2008
California Democratic Party convention in San Jose. Delegates from the city
of SLO included John Ashbaugh, Harlan Hobgood, Mark Buchman, Sandy Cook,
David Brodie, Sandra Marshall, Saro Rizzo, and Allen Cooper (invited – we
might also see Stew Jenkins if he can make it). We all came away energized
and raging to make a difference in this year’s Democratic campaign! See
below for more about the Convention.
The “main feature” of the meeting will be a screening of the film, War Made
Easy, a 73-minute documentary that reveals the deadly complicity between the
nation’s media and warmongers in the Bush Administration in the run-up to
the Iraq War. According to its web site,
“War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year
pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United
States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor
and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of
official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing
in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically
disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential
administrations. War Made Easy gives special attention to parallels between
the Vietnam War and the war in Iraq. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon’s
meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents disturbing
examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare
footage of political leaders and leading journalists from the past,
including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara,
dissident Senator Wayne Morse, and news correspondents Walter Cronkite and
Morley Safer.”
Also at the meeting, we’ll talk about the overall campaign for June 3,
including plans to raise money for Robert Cuthbert, and the ongoing effort
to raise money for the Democratic HQ and voter registration campaign. Anyone
who attended the Party’s National Convention Delegate Selection caucuses in
Santa Barbara on April 13 will also be most welcome to talk about that
experience.
See you Monday evening!
